Window Locks

Window locks are devices that are used to secure windows and prevent unauthorised entry into a home. They are made of a combination of materials that makes them sturdy and durable. UPVC window locks work by securing the window in place using a latch that engages with a striker plate attached to the window frame. While window locks can certainly help to improve the security of a property, they are not a fool proof solution. However, by making it more difficult to enter a property, window locks can help to discourage opportunistic burglars and slow down any attempts to force entry. At MB DIY, we offer various Types of Window Locks, including Window-Stay, Saracen Window Lock, Espagnolette Lock, and more!

Types of Window Locks

There are several types of window locks available, each with its own unique method of securing windows. In the following sections, we will discuss three common types of window locks: the Espagnolette Lock, the Saracen Window Lock, and the Window-Stay in more detail, including how they work to safeguard your home.

Espagnolette Lock

The most common type of lock for uPVC windows is the Espagnolette Lock, which has a Gearbox as its main component. The window handle fits into a square hole in the centre box of the lock. When the handle is lifted, the centre box moves rollers along the length of the lock, engaging the second half of the lock, which is called the keep. The window keep is located inside the window frame and provides a secure locking point for the espagnolette lock.

Some espagnolette locks have extra teeth on the ends, which can be extended to provide extra locking points with a shot bolt. This added security feature is particularly useful for larger windows.

Saracen Window Lock

Sash windows have a distinct charm, but their Saracen window locks can be a source of frustration. These locks have been in use for many years and are susceptible to failure due to age. However, our Saracen gearboxes are an ideal solution to this issue, and they can be purchased separately for easy replacement.

When it comes to these gearboxes, there are several options available. You can choose toothed versions that activate a shoot bolt through grooves, roller versions that move a roller across the frame and into a locking point, and deadbolt models that fire into the frame for additional security.

It’s important to note that a like-for-like replacement is necessary when changing a Saracen gearbox to ensure compatibility with your current hardware. With some proper care and new hardware, your sash windows will be restored to their former glory in no time.

Window-Stay

A window-stay is a popular locking mechanism used on timber windows. It is commonly used in conjunction with a “Window Fastener” and works by preventing the window from being opened beyond a certain point.

To install a window-stay, a bracket is attached to the window frame, and a locking arm is attached to the window. This arm then engages with the bracket, limiting the window’s opening size. The stay arm, which is the metal rod extending from the bracket and attaching to the window, needs to be measured to determine the size of the replacement Window Stay required.

Window Stays provide an added layer of security to your home by preventing a window from being opened beyond a certain point, thus deterring potential intruders. However, they also allow for ventilation while still providing some level of security, making them an excellent option for ground floor windows.

Overall, a window stay and fastener combination is a reliable and convenient way to secure your windows. With the right installation and maintenance, you can enjoy the benefits of added security and controlled ventilation for your home.

Protecting Your Home: The Importance of Window Locks

Window locks are an essential component of any home security. They come in a variety of types, including Espagnolette locks, Saracen Window Locks, and Window Stays, each with its own unique method of securing windows. UPVC window locks, in particular, are popular for their sturdiness and durability.

Espagnolette locks are popular for their strength and reliability. Saracen Window Locks, on the other hand, secure windows by engaging a bolt that is attached directly to the window frame. Window Stays work by limiting the opening size of a window, providing a basic level of security while still allowing for ventilation.

While window locks can certainly help to improve the security of a property, they are not a fool proof solution. However, by making it more difficult to enter a property, window locks can help to discourage opportunistic burglars and slow down any attempts to force entry.
