Understanding the Master Key System

Despite the name of the system being called a ‘Master Key System’ it is in fact not the key which is the most important element in the system. When the cylinder is manufactured it is made in a specific way which allows multiple different keys to operate the same lock. When additional cylinders are manufactured in accordance with this same design the result is a comprehensive master key system.

So how does the system work? Imagine you own a hotel or a series of properties and each occupant of the hotel / houses have their own individual room key. The owners, cleaner or maintenance person, for example, would then have a master key which accesses every lock within this system. This allows them unattended access if need be, replacing a huge key chain with one single key with access to all locks.

How Do master Keys Work?

A master key looks no different to any key within the master suite, in it’s raw format it could easily be mistaken for a normal key although quite often, master keys have a sleeve added onto them to differentiate them from the other keys. This ensures the master key is identifiable and safeguards it from falling into the wrong hands!

Some people may think of master keys as skeleton keys but despite some similarities in the function of the key, they are in fact, quite different.

A skeleton key is in fact named after a skeleton because it has been reduced to its minimalistic form, it is made with some teeth removed allowing it to manipulate specific locks, where a master key is made at the point of the suiting system to fit the cylinder. This gives you a much more complex security system with room for growth.

The Master Key Advantage

The master key lock is the fundamental part of the master key suite, without this series of specific locks we just have a standard lock system. What makes the master key lock special is the fact that the pins in the lock have multiple breaks in them, this allows each lock to have two possible opening combinations.

One of the combinations is opened with the standard key, the other combination is opened with the master key. In more complex systems where a ‘Grandmaster Key’ is introduced, these specific locks would have three opening combinations. These would be used in a system where an occupant would have their own key, a floor manager would have access to all rooms on one floor, and the owner would have access to every floor in the building and the rooms within it. The entire system is only possible with a complex manufacturing process to make each individual lock within the system.
